We have a 2 month+ JRT and are haveing a difficult time potty training him. We take him outside to the same place each time and praise him and give him a treat when he does go outside. He's been with us for a week and seems very comfortable at home here. He will however after sniffing outside for 10 min. or more will come back in and go in the house. I got myself a JRT in March. His name is Gabriel. He looks angelic for a dog plus I wanted him to have a biblical name. My mother calls him Gabby, my sister Gabs, my niece Abrel since she cannot pronounce Gabriel, and I also came up with Gabness. Gabriel is solid white with brown ears and one brown spot above the tail. He got his brown from his mother and his father is solid white without markings. He was born on a farm in Seymour, TN 2/26/02. Gabriel is a loving and unusual dog. He loves people. He is unusual to me because of some of the food he likes that other dogs don't like. He likes tomatos, onions, raisins, nuts, bananas, cantalope, corn, potatos, and etc. His favorite activities are fetch, tug-o-war, car rides, and nipping on me. I thank God for him.

Just received my first Jack Russell as a birthday gift 6/6/02. He was born 4/2/02, and is quite a handful already! I am the very proud owner of two Jack Russell bitches. My JRT puppy was diagnosed with Legg/Calve/Perthes at 6 months old and has had the hip joint removal operation. I lost the page and comments. I need some suggestions as to how to cope with a 1 year old jack russell. He is getting very aggressive with my daughter, biting her pants and sweater. She takes him for walks and runs. I am thinking of sending him to a rescue. If anyone can help us please do so. thank you
Reply: If the dog is becoming uncontrollable at 1 year it could be that you do not understand JRTs and need professional help for both you and the dog, talk to your veterinarian and be honest with them request that they help you contact a very good professional trainer for one on one training.

Hi, I have 2 J.R.'s Winston a 3yr. old short haired, and Sophie a 1 1/2 yr. old rough coat. They are the greatest little dogs! They're amusing, playful little comedians. I am a first time new mom to a jack russell named GUS. What a handful. I have had several dogs over the years boxers, schnauzers, chihuhuas, and mixes.but nothing compares to the carziness of GUS He is so loveable but sure needs alot of attention. Never leaves us alone for a minute. It is a little hard on me but I think he will settle a little as he gets older. He has more toys than my kids did. Have any good helpful information to stop his biting. Baby teeth are sharp and he has me black and blue don't want to punish him to much but he is so fiesty that he just growls back when I holler NO! Hi, I think your web site is great ! I have a short hair JRT, his name is Pennack (nicknamed after my Great Uncle, his nick name was Pennack, which in Italian means "big nose") He is 3 yrs old and VERY energetic. Excellent with kids, (very protective of my son 8 yrs old) Very smart and freindly. He thinks he is 130 lbs instead of his actual weight of 13-16 lbs.

Real nice web site. We bought our first JRT a little over a year ago. He's a wonderful companion and playmate to everyone in the family. He's spoiled rotten because he is just TOO CUTE!!! He is pretty obedient and likes to travel, too. The kids named him Eddie after the dog on Frasier (although he doesn't look a thing like him) JRT's are the GREATEST!

My husband & I have always been 'big dog' people and laughed at people that had 'ankle biters'. Our Jack was a stray, I had seen him wandering our neighborhood for several days in December. It does get rather cool at night even in Georgia in December. So I sweet talked my husband into letting me bring him in for the night (we already had 2 "big dogs') so he would be warm and fed. We love JR's! Daisy(our current JR - female 2 yrs) has a beautiful temperament. Unlike our previous JR's she doesn’t think she is a Pit Bull Terrier and want to fight every dog in the park. She is a gentle little thing and we love her for that just like we loved Lily(our previous dog) for her feistiness’. We've found that while their might be some generalizations you can make for the breed (e.g. they love to rat around and hunt) all JR's have their own unique personality and it is fun to see how this develops in their lives.

This is the perfect dog if you like to excercise and have a great companion. They are great with other dogs and can be very sweet when you need them to be. They are very energetic and love to play. We have probably the most laid back JRT you can imagine. He is very protective of both of us. Someone told us that they thought a JRT would make the PERFECT retirement dog! If you can run like a deer, have the stamina of a bull, always have NO on the end of your tongue,and love to be cuddled, you need a JRT.

When Celia came to live with me at 10 weeks old - it didn't take her long to become "queen bee". She is the first dog I have ever owned - and I really can't remember life without her. Every one who knows us say we are just alike. I take that as a compliment - she is a very special girl and a typical "turbo" style JRT. She will be 3 in August and sometimes I think I'd like to get another one for companionship for Cilia, but I don't know what I would do if she would like the new addition too much. Though the name may not be what one would think a fine little lady should be named, she definately is a little Rascal. We have had a little 4 month old Jack for two weeks. I have to say, I have fallen totally in love with him. He came from a home where he lacked attention. I had and still have my concerns about being able to give him what he needs. We have another dog, three cats and two lively granddaughters aged 6 and 7. We both work, fortunately, I can take the little fellow to work with me a lot, but not all the time. I worry a lot about how much I have to give him, and yet, passing him along to yet another home does not seem an option at this point.

On Christmas day,2001 I lost my friend of 9 years Percy, a rat terrier, to heart worms.One month later my girlfriend got me a JRT.Like Percy, this little man takes every step I make. I love your site. Since May 2001 I have been separated from my husband. During the mid-90's I had a bout of depression and to try and get me out of it, my parents bought me a Jack Russell ("Blizzard") .and sure enough it did the trick. Growing up with breeders and now formidible international Judges, I have had nothing but extreme love for dogs, but JRT in particular. since my separation, I have only seen blizzard a couple of times. i miss him so much and I have a cry each day that I don't see him. going through divorce is an expensive endeavour, so needless to say, I am "dogless" I have never felt so empty in my life. when I left I was not able to bring Blizzard with me and now I am not even able to step foot on my old property. so, to see the sites that have pics of JRTs. brings me a world of silent joy. This is a wonderful site and I have nothing but good things to say about JRT. These little giants bring so much to the world of their 'humans.' They give so much back to anything their humans have to offer. if ever there need be a spokesperson for these gentle, intelligent giants, I would be it. I really enjoyed your site. Last summer my husband and I were camping at a State Park close by. All the campers were being harrased by a small white dog with a brown head. The park rangers told me he had been abandoned in the park and would have to be disposed of soon because he was making quite the nuisance of himself. Being a dog lover I offered to take him untill I could find him a home. Needless to say, I fell in love. Jack (great imagination huh?) has become the light of our lives. My vet assures me he is a Jack Russell and of high quality. I can't for the life of me understand why someone would just dump him out. He also showed some signs of abuse.

I am new to terriers. I have a 10 month old JRT. I previously owned and showed Golden Retrievers in obedience. I would like to get into the go to ground trials and racing with my JRT but am having trouble finding a club or information for Kentucky. Any pointers? We lost our first JRT (Baby Jack) at 6 months to a hit and run accident. I grieved terribly and refused to ever get another dog. But of course it was only a month later that Richard brought home Sam. I was never mean to him, but I was determined not to love him like Baby Jack. As luck would have it, I became ill and had to be out of work for 7 weeks. Guess who became my best friend and companion!!!!!!! SAM. He was as wild as a buck, was a real chore to housebreak, chewed everything chewable and some things that were not, completely terrorized the cats, and moved into our hearts so firmly that we had to do something to see that he didn't meet the same fate as Baby Jack. I called our Vet and she suggested an invisible fence. That is the best money we ever spent. Sam has about an acre, partially wooded, to run and play and chase squirrels and the cats. He learned his lessons regarding the fence very quickly, which didn't surprise me since he is the smartest little boy in the world - and the cutest and the sweetest. I still miss Baby Jack, but I'm so glad Sam and I both learned our lessons well. Jean

Yup, a 2 yr old male, is mostly white and brown with a smooth coat. We lives on a farm with different types of animals; (Cows, horses, shetland ponies, donkies, water buffalo, plains buffalo, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, emues, turkeys, and aligators in the lake) Yup defintly respects all, but has no fear of any of mentioned animals. He is great on the farm. He is best around children. Each day He has to have his morning coffee with cream, or a afternoon pepsi. This breed is definitley different. We love him for his companionship and cunning nature. You can't fool him with his smart behavior. He is very intellegent, and makes a wonderful companion. He is lots of fun on the farm. You never know what he might do next. He can be cuddly, loving, loyal in every way, but totally mischievious. He has a few bad habits, We can't seem to house break him. Yup can also be very devious when he wants to be, sometimes wanting to pull the stuffing out of my pillow while I am asleep. Courageous as the largest breed of dog when it comes to protection and guarding the house. I would recommend a Jack Russel Terrier to any family or individual who wants the best dog of their life. WE love YUP very much..

I, or should I say Mandy aquired me 1 1/2 yrs. ago and life as I knew it was gone forever. We are best of friends, she goes everywhere I do. She lives up to the breed. I am 51yrs young thanks to her I can say this. She keeps me on my toes 24/7. I never have to worrie about cold toes, she curles herself around them (under the blanket) everynight. I can't think what life would be like without her.

Lovely dogs and great site. I just got my first JRT this Christmas. (She was a gift from my husband, but we chose the breed well in advance and found a nice breeder.) We have now added Mia to our home and couldn't be happier. She is a bundle of joy and love. Mostly white with black head that has the cutest accents of brown. What a sweetie! We start obedience classes 1/17 and I hope to take her hiking and walking on the beach. What a great breed we have! Lora

I am awaiting a male and female, (not for breeding), from the same litter who were born on Boxing Day. I have just lost my "love of my life", Brandy, who was hit and killed by a hit and run driver. Brandy looked like Frasier on the T.V. series. Although I have three other dogs, different breeds, Brandy was special, and we walked miles together.

We are looking to get a new dog. ( or two ) and think maybe the JRT might be the one. But we don't know much about the breed. We have no childern in the home. But have five grandkids and want a breed that works well with kids. Also we stay at our cabin alot and have no fence. so need a dog who will stay close to home.Our cabin also is next to the river so this breed I hope likes water. Thank you for your help. After growing up with Terriers of various types, we rescued our abandoned little Bulli almost two years ago. I read your page on Bad Dog - sure sounded like a bad dream from two years ago. 4 months of obedience did the trick. I'm lucky to work outside in a wooded area and he is on a first name basis with ALL the squirrels, gophers, and moles in the area!
